Winders & slitter-rewinders

The machine runs.
The roll still isn't right.

A machine can be mechanically and electrically capable and still make a poor roll. Old or new, I follow the problem through tension, speed, mechanics, controls, material and setup.

Start with the symptom

What is the machine doing?

Roll quality

Wrinkles, telescoping, starring, poor edges, or rolls that become too soft or too hard through the build.

Unstable tension

Unwind or rewind behavior that changes with speed, diameter, material or setup. Dancers, load cells, brakes and drives all belong in the investigation.

Speed and stopping

Poor section coordination, inconsistent footage, difficult slowdown or unexpected behavior during a normal stop.

Mechanical interaction

Shafts, chucks, nips, rider rolls or unwind geometry that affect the web. Coordinate alignment work when the machine needs it.

Controls and drives

A confusing sequence, an unreliable recipe, a drive that needs attention, or a control system that is difficult to support.

Different shifts, different results

A good run depends on who is at the controls. Separate machine problems from setup and training needs.

From symptom to correction

Not every roll problem needs a rebuild.

I work with your operators and maintenance team to understand when the problem appears and how the machine sections interact. The answer may be tuning, logic, feedback, mechanics, a different winding arrangement or time beside an operator.

Where new controls or drives are the right answer, the upgrade starts with the machine's operating requirements. The result has to show up in production, not just in the cabinet.

Working with IMS

Start with the roll, the settings and when it changes.

Some work can begin with video, controls files or machine data. Other work needs a visit. We agree the scope and work with qualified people at the plant where the task requires them.
